The Last Act Movie Review

Ratings:3.5/5 Review By: Madhureeta Mukherjee Site:TimesofIndia(TOI)
Conceptualized by Anurag Kashyap, ' The Last Act', roped in 12 first-time directors to make 12 short-films that form a part of the same feature film. Every director brings in his own style to this montage-of-mysteries, in most parts it's riveting, leaving you entangled in a web of curious cases. There are truck-loads of actors (not all from mainstream cinema), who perform their bit well, intensifying the plot as they go along. In the second half, the thrill goes thanda in some moments, and you're desperately waiting for the suspense to explode. Of course, with a dozen clues to deconstruct, even good 'ol Sherlock Holmes, Poirot and our desi Agent Vinod would be straining their brains. With a unique concept at hand and an all-new directors' gang, getting the 'act together' is no mean feat. Team of 12 - Take a bow, this stage is all yours.

What’s Good: The very concept of 12 directors collaborating for one film; the direction; music. What’s Bad: Too many characters stretch the mystery too long; the meandering stories. Loo Break: None. Watch or Not?: Watch it if you have the patience to untangle a web and for something that you rarely get to see in Indian cinema.

Barfi! Movie Review by Top Critics

Ratings:3/5 Barfi! Review by Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive (CNN IBN)
That rare film that puts a smile on your face even before a single frame of the story is revealed, Anurag Basu’s Barfi envelopes you like a warm blanket from the moment you settle into your seat. Not content telling a simple story without any fuss, he complicates the narrative with confusing timelines and a needless whodunit subplot. Sadly, Basu’s film goes on too long and drags its feet in the end. Barfi had the potential to be great cinema, but as it stands it’s a respectable film that’s still better than a lot else you’re likely to see. I’m going with three out of five for director Anurag Basu’s Barfi. It’s a treat like the mithai it takes its name from. Go on, indulge your sweet tooth.

BARFI! cannot be slotted in any particular genre. The beauty of the film lies in the fact that it instantly absorbs you into Barfi's world. I wish to specify that one should not correlate BARFI! with disability. It's more about characters who face the challenges that life has to offer, yet live a more gratifying life than anyone else. It's about living each day of your life to the fullest, giving happiness, feeling love. It's a unique love story between three exceptional characters, something we haven't witnessed on the Hindi screen earlier. On the whole, BARFI! is unusual for Bollywood. You don't formulate movies like BARFI! targeting its box-office potential or its commercial prospects. You create such films for the passion of cinema. BARFI! is akin to a whiff of fresh air. Its foremost triumph is that it leaves you with a powerful emotion: Happiness! I sincerely believe, no Hindi movie buff should deprive himself/herself of watching this brilliant motion picture. Also, the viewer needs to savor Ranbir, Priyanka and Ileana's paramount performances, one of the strengths of this movie. Strongly recommended!

This is a film made with love, bolstered by wonderfully etched vignettes, Ranbir Kapoor's stupendous performance and a gorgeous soundtrack by Pritam. And yet, for me, Barfi was a singularly frustrating experience there was so much to like, but the film never became more than the sum of its parts. As long as Basu stays with the love track, the film moves, but then we are sidetracked by suspense, which isn't all that suspenseful because you can predict exactly who did what. The film insists too hard that we find the magical in the mundane. I wish Barfi! the film was as magical as Barfi the character. See it for him.

A well-crafted script with an intriguing back-and-forth narrative -- set in the present day, 1978 and 1972 -- Barfi! intrigues, right to the point somewhere down the middle, when it becomes more than apparent exactly what the film's story is, after which all goes south. And yet so impressive and earnest are most parts of Barfi! that one is inclined even to forgive its flawed centre; we want badly to overlook the film's peach-seed heart, and concentrate on the rest of its juicy joys. And these it provides in abundance.

Had the drama been more compact and linear, the film would’ve been far more universal in its appeal. The post-interval portion, especially, is long-winding and, therefore, boring. .On the whole, Barfi! is a heart-warming love story which is different. It will be loved by the class audience and the city-based public, especially by those who frequent multiplexes. As for the masses of the single-screen cinemas and the audience in ‘B’ and ‘C’ class centres, they would not find the film as satisfying.

Everything that has to go wrong will go wrong, but not if you brave it with a broad smiley. So 'mute' the high decibel chaos and deafening melodrama around and tune into Barfi ki duniya; which is simple, sweet and SILENT! Yet, extreme emotions of love, joy and pain resound - at different 'frequencies'.For a story riddled with disabilities, Barfi is more than ably handled by Anurag Basu. He remarkably immerses you in his world of sounds and verbose silences, recreating Chaplin's antics, stripping two superstars down to basics and sensitively spinning a magical world of unconditional love. The narrative is too non-linear at times, and the pace slows in the second half. That apart, it's truly path-breaking for Bollywood.

Barfi! celebrates life without dismissing the dark passages and roadblocks that we often encounter as we travel through that craggy road to death. To be able to celebrate life so warmly and sensitively the filmmaker has to know death closely. Basu, a concer survivor, has been there.Barfi! comes as close to being a modern masterpiece as cinematically possible. To miss it would be a crime. To embrace it is to serenade the sublime.

'Barfi’! does take several brave strides. It’s good in many ways; what stops it from being a great film is a degree of fuzziness, and an insistence on prettiness.Still, I’d weigh in on the film’s side. It is so hard to find a Hindi film which does disability with any seriousness, and with sensitivity. ‘Barfi’ has its heart in the right place, and doesn’t waver from its intentions

From start to finish, director Anurag Basu never gives up on Barfi's quirkiness. The storytelling leaves you positive, rekindling a lost belief in old-style, unconditional loving. For someone who cries easily at the movies, Barfi! is a thorough tearjerker. Dissecting a film that left you speechless is difficult. Just let go, indulge in the magic of Barfi!

Ranbir Kapoor has proved he’s the actor in town. And Barfi is one more addition to the films we’ll remember him for. Barfi! is that rare film that can make you smile and make you cry in the same scene. Its technical brilliance is only outdone by its emotional complexity and depth. Pritam’s music adds a nice silent-era charm to this already fantastic story, making it an occasion when words simply aren’t enough.

BARFI! is a one-man show - Ranbir Kapoor.Barfi and Jhilmil together is just not logic. It is tragic. Take away the character of Jhilmil and Basu would have been on a roll. There are a few poignant moments in the film and this is thanks to the three 'bechara characters' who tug at your heart. Visually, the film is appealing. It has a different treatment and a hatke cinematic appeal. The three star rating is not for the brilliance of the film; it's for the genius of Ranbir Kapoor. A performance worth a watch!

All praises aside Barfi isn’t short of its minuses. There are moments when the film gets droopy, with two of the primary three characters not having any dialogues; the silence gets unnerving that you fight the urge to not get distracted. However thankfully Ranbir flawless act saves the day. With heaps of charm and poignancy, Barfi traces human spirit, relationships, thru chaplinesque comedy in some parts and smiles through tears in many others. You get as involved in Barfi’s journey as all his fellow co-stars and you’re taken on this breezy ride with the right amounts of effervescence, leaving you with warmth in your heart.

Ratings:2/5 Heroine Review by Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN
Heroine, directed by Madhur Bhandarkar opens with genuine promise, but very quickly collapses into a heap of lazy stereotypes. Sadly, the film offers no original insight into the minds of movie stars or the inner workings of the Mumbai film industry – this is a movie that might well have been made by an avid reader of gossip rags. Despite an entertaining first half, thanks to all the unintentional laughs, Heroine slips into a slush of melodrama post interval. By this point, it feels interminably long and boring. Bhandarkar loses his grip on the script, and it’s evident that his storytelling now desperately needs reinventing.I’m going with two out of five for Heroine. It’s pack-up for this one!

HEROINE astounds you with its brutal bluntness. Also, the director illustrates the heartrending and lamentable realities of the movie world brilliantly. On the flip side, although the writing borrows from reality and has ample shock value, the writers could've avoided a few episodes in Mahi's story, which seem unimportant. HEROINE is Kareena's film all the way and she delivers an award-worthy performance. On the whole, HEROINE is yet another hard-hitting motion picture from Madhur Bhandarkar. For persistently choosing women-centric themes, for consistently winning national acclaim and most significantly, magnetizing moviegoers in large numbers to view his cinema, the efforts of the maverick film-maker deserve to be lauded. Watch HEROINE for Madhur's imposing direction, for Kareena's superlative performance, watch it also for its fearless, inspiring and enlightening storyline divulging the scandalous realities of the movie industry. Try not to miss it!

The story, penned by Madhur Bhandarkar, Anuradha Tiwari and Manoj Tyagi, is quite dark and depressing. Even the screenplay, written by the trio and Niranjan Iyengar, has plenty of sad and depressing moments and very few happy ones. In that sense, the film lacks very much in entertainment value. On the whole, Heroine is too stark and dark to be entertaining. It is not universally appealing. It will go down well sectionally only. Business in the big cities will be good during the weekend only, but its fate in lesser cities, lesser multiplexes and ‘B’ and ‘C’ class centres will be way below the mark.

The first half, though, has a delicious, camp quality to it. It’s hugely entertaining, unintentionally of course. But in the second half, everybody gets serious and the laughs go out of the window. Mahi weeps and weeps and then, weeps some more. Helen, playing a yesteryear superstar, gives us the moral of the story: that selling your soul for the glitter of glamour will always, always end badly.Mahi is just a trembling mass of furiously smoking insecurity from beginning to end. And she’s just not interesting enough for us to spend two and a half hours with. At one point in Heroine, a character asks: Iss glamour industry mein kaun fraud nahin hota. This film certainly is one.

Very clearly the written material at hand draws from unflattering accounts of various real and reel Hindi film heroines of the 80s who were in messy situations with their married co-stars. The film is made enjoyable by some pithy dialogue credited to Niranjan Iyengar. Heroine would have been crisper had it not digressed to cover every Bollywood insider account. Of course the saving grace of the film is Kareena who not only looks drop-dead gorgeous but is also adept as the girl interrupted. Heroine is Kareena's Dirty Picture. The actress has shown ample cleavage and partaken in some really intimate bedroom scenes. Definitely worth a dekho!

How do you take a film seriously when all it has on its mind is to somehow convey all the juicy tittle-tattle Bhandarkar has accumulated over the past two years in the name of research. How do you care for a character that's neither about triumph of spirit nor being a victim of abuse? Unfortunately, in Heroine everything strikes as so deliberate, it's hard to tell the thin line between bold and sensational. Bhandarkar seems so enamored by his electrifying Heroine he probably forgot to say 'Cut' during the last half hour, which seems like a never-ending audition of a nervous breakdown making Heroine overbearing, desperate and agonizingly long. The film ends on an abrupt and futile note making everything that happened before a waste of time.

The foremost problem with Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine is that behind its gossamer exterior, it is weighed down by banalities that don't quite add up.In conveying the ebbs and tides of the life of a self-obsessed, impulsive and troubled Bollywood diva, the film taps into the tropes that constitute the Bhandarkar formula. The novelty has worn off. So, all that the audience is left with is an overwhelming sense of déjà vu.Heroine is drably monotonous, its insights are shallow, most of the characters are caricatures and the lines that they speak border on the corny, if not on the outright ridiculous.

Before the interval, the film is a mess up of fast-paced events. The second half, though slow, manages to bring these events into order to lead to a predictable end.If you are a Madhur Bhandarkar fan, I would recommend you skip this one. One, it may be disappointing; two, you’ve seen all this before. If you are a Kareena Kapoor fan, it’s a treat. All said and done, the film may be a one-time watch. But if you expected too much out of the film, it may not be worth the anticipation and your money.

The only reason to watch Madhur Bhandarkar’s films is for the way they go behind the headlines and show us the dirt and the hurt that’s usually brushed under frayed rags and burnished carpets. In his better moments, Bhandarkar has let us see the stuff that’s crawled out from underneath clearly, and we’ve overlooked the tackiness because it has added to the understanding of the subject. ‘Heroine’, Bhandarkar’s pass at Bollywood, does none of this. It remains a string of drab cliches, despite a strong performance from leading lady Kareena Kapoor.

Kareena Kapoor impresses in Heroine, but is let down by the film itself. Unfortunately the sheer mediocrity surrounding her -- with everyone in spoof mode, especially the dialogue writers -- never lets us feel for her character in what turns out to be a grotesquely long film.

Wronged lead protagonist. Check. Cheating lover. Check. Clinical depression. Check. Manipulative friends. Check. Homosexuality. Check. Rising and then eventually falling and slowly fading in career. Check. These are the main ingredients of each and every Madhur Bhandarkar film. And ‘Heroine’ is no different really. The premise of the film, like every other film of Bhandarkar's, remains the same. Lead protagonist who has negative shades goes through the highs and lows in her life, enjoys a period of success and then goes through a low phase only to reform and rebuild herself as a human being.2 for the film and one extra one for Bebo. Three cheers for the film

For those who are enchanted by Bollywood and its troubled stars, this film is delightfully voyeuristic as it takes you into their sexy-yet-shady world. While the film’s first half is brisk, the second half meanders but manages to get its act together towards the end. There are some obvious loopholes -- such as how a top actress such as Mahi can be this isolated from the human race and reality -- but the weak links aside it’s a satisfying watch.

Now for the action and all that scary stuff the Resident Evil series is usually made up of. Well, the fifth installment has its share of action -- bullets, bombs and the zombies in thousands -- that does make you sit up as the blood and gore hits your face. However, it's only when the emphasis is too much on all that long drawn conversation leading to longer gaps in the action cuts, do you end up feeling a bit distracted. But then when the zombies and the Red Queen with her death threat - 'You are all going to die down there' -- are back on screen, you know why the series has a strong fan base.

Playing a video game would be emotionally more gratifying and at least in that pixelated universe, choppy dialogue delivery, awkward emoting and glassy countenances wouldn't be out of place. (To be fair, there was a lingering doubt in my mind as to whether or not the actress playing femme fatale Ada Wong was a CGI model).Gamers, don't settle for this; there will have been a million in-game cinematics more moving than this tripe. Casual viewers, do not subject yourself to Resident Evil: Retribution lest you emerge as brain-dead as the creatures in it.

It’s 10 years later, Milla is still around, so are Rodriguez, writer-director Anderson, the zombies, leather, guns, blood and shooting. Those 15-year-olds though may have moved on. In a story that manages to be both incredulous and boring, everything from zombies/aliens to monsters and axe-wielding giants are thrown the way of Alice (Jovovich). Later, she is shot, trampled and has her heart brought to a stop, literally -- without a crack on either her or her all-leather unitard ensemble.

The fifth entry in a series as indestructible as Alice (Milla Jovovich), its caffeinated heroine, "Resident Evil: Retribution" finds her still on the mysterious ship where "Resident Evil: Afterlife" left her. Almost a decade has passed since the endlessly mutating T-Virus began transforming most of humanity (and zoology) into drooling, pimply cannibals, but Alice — part human, part viral, all airbrushed — is still fighting to save the world. She must be as tired as we are.Taking place almost entirely inside computer-simulated global locations, "Retribution" moves closer than ever to its airless video game roots

Ratings:2/5 Rush Review by Taran Adarsh Site:Bollywood Hungama

RUSH could've transformed into an invigorating tale, eye-catching, soul-piercing take on ambition, aspiration and salvation, but it meanders into the predictable zone after a great start, giving you the feeling of déjà vu on several occasions. The writing is markedly foreseeable, with the screenwriter opting for the predictable stuff. However, a few individualistic sequences do stand out, but they are few and far between. There were seeds of a riveting thriller, but the plot hangs loose at various critical and decisive junctures. There's a glimmer of hope prior to the climax, with those moments getting a grip of things, but the culmination is tame, quite a letdown. On the whole, RUSH looks like a rushed job. It could've been an interesting take on ambition and aspiration, but it comes across as a half-baked product.

First, the good news - Rush has an interesting plot and great detailing, the latter unusual in Bollywood. But there's bad news too - no amount of lip gloss, nor shiny suits can hide poor acting, which Rush features plenty of. In the second half, Hashmi does wade into the deeper end, exposing a criminal-media nexus - but after too much waffling with cliches, it's too little, too late.Still, while not the relentless thriller it could've been, Rush offers some slick seconds. But despite all that, Rush lacks zip - plus, Hashmi doesn't kiss.So much for adrenalin, dude.

Quite a few filmmakers seem to be fascinated by the television media business. But whether it was the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Rann or Emraan Hashmi's latest film Rush, none of them even get their basic facts right.Emraan Hashmi plays his part with honesty but it doesn't look like his contribution will save this film. After a series of hits and critically acclaimed roles this one will do no good to Hashmis' rising career. The shooting style in a lot of scenes and even the songs with spot lights on actors gives the feel of the 1980s cinema. We cannot recommend Rush.

Far-fetched, yes. But Rush has its adrenaline rushing moments in the second half when the narrative picks up momentum and moves steadily towards a climax that is not entirely edge-of-the-seat. Emraan as the backbone of plot performs decently. He has more speaking lines and less kissing to do here than in all his recent films. Whether the verbosity actually translates into something substantial or not is debatable.Rush has the bone though not enough meat to make for a juicy fare on the excesses of television journalism. It leaves you wondering what director Shamin Desai would have done with his film making career had he lived.

This one seems to be set in an alternate universe, where laws and police don’t exist, and television ratings rule the world. The film could seriously work as a bleak view into a disturbingly scary, fictionalised future. Except, it’s set in the present, and in the present, as we know, there are about 800 TV channels in India, of which a majority are news stations, none of which make big bucks, if they make any profits at all. When the film eventually reveals the dangerous practices employed by his TV station, you may wish to laugh. But you don’t. Because this is an Emraan Hashmi flick my brothers. No one walked into the theatre looking for a story. They want sex and Sufi songs. There is no sex. There are lots of Sufi songs. Damn, what’s the point then.

Twilight : Breaking Dawn Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive (CNN-IBN)
This penultimate film in the saga starts off promisingly, but swiftly sinks into the quicksand of silliness that has dogged this series since after Catherine Hardwicke’s moody first film. Breaking Dawn Part 1 is an improvement on both New Moon and Eclipse, but it’s still got so much unintentional humor and clunky dialogue that only fans of the series – or Twi-hards as they’ve come to be known – will still be able to embrace it. I’m going with two out of five for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1. If you’re not a fan, look at it this way – there’s only one more film to go, and then we’re rid of them once and for all.

As happens with most penultimate films of the much celebrated franchises, this film lacks pretty much everything which made Twilight series (film adaptations) so endearing in the first place. There is no compelling climax, humour is occasional, story stays stagnant, no conflict points in the script, secondary but significant characters find themselves doing a cameo .However despite its drawbacks, Breaking Dawn remains a film not to be missed, after all you get to witness the much awaited wedding of the year as Edward finally weds Bella. Breaking Dawn: Part 1 disappoints when compared to the previous Twilight films. Lets hope Twilight regains its beauty in the last of the Twilight series: Breaking Dawn Part 2.

In the first half of Meyer's final installment, sketchily adapted by Melissa Rosenberg, director Bill Condon crams in a whole bunch of issues -- marriage, pregnancy, childbirth -- robbing the romance of all its lightweight conflicts to create an environment of half-hearted drama and laughable sentimentality. Welcome to the Bold and Beautiful of the brain dead.Still, it's not the worst Twilight movie in the series. That distinction is still safe with the awfully mawkish and excruciatingly long, New Moon. After a photogenic beginning and lackluster middle, Breaking Dawn redeems itself at the fag end with a gruesome but emphatic imagery of Bella in labour, setting a precarious tone for the concluding chapter of the franchise. Except that nearly two hours are wasted in establishing very little, underscoring the needless yet exploitative exercise of splitting a volume into two.

The sappy drama in Breaking Dawn leaves not much time for remotely enjoyable vampire-werewolf clashes seen in Eclipse. Oscar-winning director Bill Condon’s (Dreamgirls) vision is witnessed in a few scenes like that on the streets of Rio, the dinner speech montage and watercraft ride to Edward’s island. Everything else is plain lack of will and imagination. No euphemism can help express the consistently humdrum acting talent in the lead cast. Perhaps, they must be congratulated for making money out of hysterical young girls for whom the Twilight movies are the closest they could get to ‘heroes’ Edward and Jacob. If you’re not a fan, the lethargic cast, slow-witted screenplay by Melissa Rosenberg and overall foolhardiness is likely to make you cringe

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part I," is the latest and best of the movies about a girl, her vampire and their impossible, ridiculously appealing - yes, I surrendered - love story.Marked by a canny mix of violence and chastity, the franchise has always had plenty of broken heads to go along with its pure thoughts, but here it also features a marital bed reduced to kindling after a rough night. Here, though,Bella returns as the emotional and psychological cornerstone in a series in which the center of gravity has shifted from frenzied action and reaction to love.

Bella Swan kisses abstinence and mortality goodbye in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1," in which the vampire-loving teen gets hitched, knocked up and almost destroyed from within by her little bundle of joy. All the more disappointing, then, that a story so pregnant with dramatic possibilities should wind up feeling like such an unconsummated opportunity. Drawn from Stephenie Meyer's polarizing, weirdly compelling fourth novel, the film is rich in surface pleasures but lacks any palpable sense of darkness or danger.

Twilight Breaking Dawn-2 Movie Review

How ironic that a film whose characters can zip across forests faster than deer should be so slow and laborious itself! Breaking Dawn - Part 2, fifth and final installment in the cheesy but immensely popular Twilight movie franchise, is a film unlikely to appeal to anyone but hardcore fans who’ve been consistently forgiving of its many shortcomings. I’m going with a generous two out of five for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. For anyone who doesn’t worship the franchise, this is drivel. Just be glad this is the last film!

There's potential for exciting drama here but Breaking Dawn: Part 2 fades before it even begins, struggling somewhere between the now-fatigued Ed-Bella romance, stagey acting, hilariously hackneyed lines ("You guys look so good together,") and that Stewart clenched-lip grimace.Twilight fans will undoubtedly troop the theatres for the finale but it's not a fitting end to such quintessentially American drama, all folklore and fantasy, sexiness and suburbia. As Breaking Dawn-Part 2 finally closes, you're left wishing you'd been bitten so much harder. Ouch.

For a series that started with a bang, Breaking Dawn — Part 2 ends the Twilight saga on the same note. This film has to be the second best in the series after the first film, Twilight, and brings it to a fitting end.Twilight fans who liked the not-so-well made films like New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn — Part 1 will love this film. But for the rest who are looking to catch a movie this weekend, Breaking Dawn — Part 2 is worth a watch. It may not be the best film ever, but is well-made with all the elements of a good film.

Watch or Not?: If you are a fan of the Twilight series, here’s the final part that will put at ease. If not, save your money. Only die-hard fans of the Twilight saga need to watch The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, and that too just for closure. If haven’t watched any earlier, no need to start now.

Despite the slow start Mr. Condon closes the series in fine, smooth style. He gives fans all the lovely flowers, conditioned hair and lightly erotic, dreamy kisses they deserve. Just as smartly he also shakes the series up with an unexpectedly fierce, entertaining battle that finds the Cullens, flanked by their wolf friends and various vampire allies, facing down the Volturi. Set on a snowy field, this whirlwind of clashing fangs and flying fur rouses Bella to action. It also injects the movie with an invigorating energy that the movies have rarely sustained since the first "Twilight," when Catherine Hardwicke, a messy but spirited director, introduced Bella and Edward. It turns out that there’s something to be said about watching these two lovebirds tap into their inner monsters. It’s bloody good fun while it lasts.

A recap of the previous film would have been ideal but that is sacrificedto keep the movie crisp. This film has been called many things ('torture porn' being one of them). And if you get queasy at the sight of spilled guts and grey matter, shredded skin and severed body parts and death by impaling, slashing and stabbing, you're probably better off not watching this film. But if you are a fan of the genre, The Collection is worth a watch.

Movies like these have a very specific audience. In India the number of people who enjoy blood, gore, bodies being ripped apart etc are small (I hope). Fans of this genre would have definitely enjoyed movies like The Saw series, Hostel etc. These fans I’m sure suffer the risk of being called sadistic and mental to an extent. I’m not judging, but really, how can watching human bodies being slaughtered provide you pleasure? Well, anyway, let’s just say, for those who enjoy this kind-of bloody games, The Collection does not disappoint.

The truth is that whether you agree with, or aren't a fan of Chopra's brand of love stories, he conveys them with complete conviction. Chopra and his leading man lend Jab Tak Hai Jaan an indelible charm. It's that charm, coupled with the filmmaker's trademark freshness, passion, and tenderness, that still keeps you invested in these characters and their star-crossed romance.I'm going with three out of five for the late Yash Chopra's Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Despite its many script problems, it's a consistently watchable film that oozes with feeling and real emotion. A fitting swan song.

JAB TAK HAI JAAN is not your typical love story. It has the old-world charm written all over it, with twists and turns plenty. It would be a disservice if one were to reveal the journey of the three principal characters -- Samar, Meera and Akira -- since the plot changes from conventional to unconventional in its second hour. JAB TAK HAI JAAN is attention-grabbing from inception till conclusion. The drama only soars higher and the complex love story gets more and more gripping as the conflict between the characters come to the fore. Mind you, JAB TAK HAI JAAN is not the usual 'love triangle', with two women fighting for the same guy. Nor can you compare it with any Yash Chopra film of yore either. On the whole, JAB TAK HAI JAAN resonates an oft-repeated fact: Love stories will come and go. But no one will make them like Yash Chopra. Just don't miss this heartwarming love story!

Jab Tak Hai Jaan is the swan song of Yash Chopra, the big daddy of romance. Every frame is picture perfect, the emotions are well nuanced. But there is one inherent flaw--the story by Aditya Chopra is hackneyed. You will not like Jab Tak Hai Jaan if mushy romances are not your staple. The movie doesn't have the intensity of some of Yash Chopra's earlier romances like Daag, Kabhie-Kabhie, Silsila and Chandni. But it still has the stamp of the man who made some of the best romantic fare in Bollywood.

In any case, you don't go to a Yash Chopra movie to delve into realism or the messiness of relationships. You go to partake in a fantasy of swooning, idealised love - and Jab Tak Hai Jaan delivers plenty of that. This film has all the elements you would want in a Yash Chopra film - gorgeously shot locations in the UK and Kashmir, lavish songs and three inherently noble lead characters who struggle gallantly against their individual obligations. But what Jab Tak Hai Jaan does not have is a coherent plot.Jab Tak Hai Jaan is too tangled to transport you. At almost 180 minutes, it also requires enormous patience. But I recommend that you see it. Because only Yash Chopra could make heartache so attractive and ennobling that his characters wear it like a badge of honor.

A Yash Chopra drama that treads very familiar territory slickly - and a fair bit too slowly - but does so with an old-world sincerity that somehow makes most of it bearable. Rather like its leading man, who is often made to balance entire scenes on his dimples, grinning so wide his eyes appear closed. There are times in Jab Tak Hai Jaan when it's hard not to feel embarrassed for Shah Rukh Khan having to work with material this tedious - and yet he, despite the exaggerated show of youngness, manages inexplicably to charm. This is his film, and, against all odds, he works it well.

The mushy moments at the heart of the love story might feel a tad pulpy at times. ButJab Tak Hai Jaan leaves a soothing afterglow. You have seen it all before, notably in Dil To Pagal Hai and Veer-Zaara. Yet, Jab Tak Hai Jaan exudes a surprising degree of freshness. It stems from the quirky new-age twists that the screenplay throws into the mix. The story may be set in today’s times, but the theme is very Yash Chopra, wherein true love happens only once in a lifetime, and it trumps all else. The Hobbit Movie Review

Ratings:3/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN (IBNLive)

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has little of the awe and shock and wonder that thrillingly accompanied The Lord of the Rings saga. Those films felt new and exciting and unlike anything we’d already seen at the time. Which illustrates exactly what Jackson is up against this time. Still there’s no denying that there’s solid, skilled filmmaking at the heart of this film. But despite its gorgeous sweeping visuals, spectacular special effects, and some terrific action sequences, this first installment in Jackson’s three-film adaptation can’t help feeling long and overblown and stretched beyond limits. I’m going with three out of five for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Don’t set your expectations too high, and you’ll come out satisfied.

One of the best things about The Hobbit is the truly magical locations and imagery that are completely immersive and make you feel as if you are in JRR Tolkien's Middle-earth. It will entertain you even if you haven't seen any of the previous Lord of the Rings movies. Also noteworthy is the music, which meshes really well with the film and is not distracting at all. The only issue could be the running time - almost three hours long. But fora subject of this scale, it's completely justified. Good for the entire family. Note: You will not like this film if you do not like epic fantasies.

The Hobbit is visually mesmerising and, even though I am never too happy about wearing 3D glasses, the technology does the cumbersome detailing of Jackson's skillful art and technical team a huge favour by pointing it delightfully in your direction. The only aspect I am not convinced about is why Jackson chose to depict Bilbo as an enthusiastic participant of the quest when he was literally forced to join as a 'burglar' on a trip to Lonely Mountain. This sudden thirst for adventure is never truly translated on screen. But it's like Gandalf, possibly echoing Jackson's own sentiments, says this task to succeed needs 'tact, respect, charm' and 'which is why you'll leave the talking to me.' Aye, Aye Jackson!

Judging part one of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings prelude The Hobbit is a bit like reviewing a film after seeing only the first act.Yet here goes: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is stuffed with Hollywood's latest technology — 3-D, high-speed projection and Dolby's Atmos surround sound system. The result is some eye candy that truly dazzles and some that utterly distracts, It's also overstuffed with, well, stuff. Prologues and sidestepping backstory. Long, boring councils among dwarves, wizards and elves. Part one's embellishments may pay off nicely, but right now, An Unexpected Journey looks like the start of an unnecessary trilogy better told in one film.

No, the film does not choke on its on linearity, but the progression of chases and scrapes with fierce creatures transform it into the best kind of epic-journey film. And the emotional payoff (Shore's music will take you places, believe me) is well worth the tantalising buildup. Various motives have been attached to the decision to make a full-blown trilogy of Tolkien's relatively slim novel. But on watching the film, the artistic integrity behind it is quite evident. He is simply doing what he couldn't with the Fellowship of the Rings as it would debilitate the telling of the entire tale: taking his time with the adventure, and delving more on the culture and mythology that forms the backdrop of the films.

When the initial rush of a chase or a skirmish dissipates, you are left with the slightly ripped-off feeling of having been here before, but with different costumes, in a "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie or "Clash of the Titans." Over all, though, the shiny hyper-reality robs Middle-earth of some of its misty, archaic atmosphere, turning it into a gaudy high-definition tourist attraction. But of course it will soon be overrun with eager travelers, many of whom are likely to find the journey less of an adventure than they had expected.

Kagti (with her co-writer Zoya Akhtar) tells a gripping tale that operates on more levels than one. Not everything works, though. The twist in the end is cheesy, and isn’t too hard to see coming. What’s more disappointing than the twist itself is the manner in which the writers recap scenes to explain it, as if spoon-feeding those who didn’t get it right away.I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for director Reema Kagti’s Talaash. Its shortcomings notwithstanding, it’s a good example of an entertaining commercial film that didn’t need to be lazy or senseless. Don’t miss it; easily one of the better films this year.

TALAASH is dramatic and absorbing, both. Director Reema Kagti takes up an attention-grabbing premise and along with co-writer Zoya Akhtar spins a tale that makes the viewer a participant of sorts. While the cop tries hard to solve the jigsaw puzzle, the spectator, with his mind wide alert by now, gets intrigued by what he observes and perceives and is keen to get to the bottom of the mystery himself/herself. That, in my opinion, is why this suspense drama works. On the whole, TALAASH is an outstanding film. A taut psychological thriller that keeps you guessing till the end, it leaves you spellbound, leaves you mesmerized, leaves you with an exclamation, 'Wow!'. An absolute must watch for all movie buffs. You just can't afford to miss this one!

Farhan Akhtar's dialogue has fire. But the story written by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti oscillates between real and implausible; making it hard for the screenplay to bridge the gap, especially in some key portions in the second half. At time the pace also numbs you making you shift in your seat. Which is all dashed exasperating, considering just how good this film could have been. Am I being too cruel? Perhaps, but because of the wasted opportunity. The first half of ‘Talaash’ is good enough for you not to want to blink. The atmospheric thriller, top lining an angst-ridden cop, his hollow-eyed sad sack of a wife and a stunning street-walker, has you hooked right from its lovely opening credits.
