Apple iTunes U Content Passes 1 Billion Downloads

Apple’s education based iTunes platform iTunes U has topped the one billion downloads milestone. iTunes U is one of the world’s largest collections of free educational content from some of the country’s top schools and well-known libraries, museums and various other organizations.
iTunes U offers lectures, assignments, books, quizzes and other documents that can be downloaded and viewed free of charge by iOS users.
Speaking of Apple’s platform Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, notes:

“It’s inspiring to see what educators and students of all types are doing with iTunes U. With the incredible content offered on iTunes U, students can learn like never before―there are now iTunes U courses with more than 250,000 students enrolled in them, which is a phenomenal shift in the way we teach and learn.”
iTunes U
The Apple iTunes program has been so successful that more than 1,200 universities and colleges around the country have enrolled more than 100,000 students in single iTunes U courses. According to a press release from Apple:

“Stanford University and The Open University have each surpassed 60 million content downloads. The Ohio State University’s Matthew “Dr. Fus” Stoltzfus’ General Chemistry course enrolled over 100,000 iTunes U students in the first year it was offered.”
While the program offers courses from many US institutions, more than 60 percent of all iTunes U app downloads originate from outside of the United States.
The goal of the program is too educate the masses while at the same time provided international recognition and acclaim for US schools and top teachers in their respective fields.
iTunes U courses can currently be created by teachers in 30 countries including  Brazil, South Korea, Turkey and United Arab Emirates. The courses after being created can then be accessed via the iTunes U app in 155 countries.
Apple notes that aside from iTunes U the company hosts more than 75,000 educational apps that provide free and cheap learning materials in many cases.

The program has been so successful that Professor Stokols, whose Environmental Psychology course enrolls over 170,000 students, had this to say about iTunes U:

“Because of iTunes U, I have been able to introduce students and colleagues in China to research on the links between chronic multi-tasking, information overload and stress; discuss research publications and degree programs with students in Europe; and exchange information about the influence of neighborhood design on community levels of physical activity and obesity with students in Australia. The opportunity to impact so many students who are gaining interest in environmental psychology by taking my free course on iTunes U has been highly rewarding and gratifying for me as an educator and learner.”
Do you see the value in more teachers implementing iTunes U based courses around the world?

Apple Bluetooth Smart Watch Under Consideration [Rumor]

While much of the focus towards Apple lately has been geared towards its rumored Apple TV, the company may first roll out an Apple Bluetooth Smart Watch. A new rumor from Chinese gadget news site Tech.163 suggests that the watch is already being designed and that Intel is working alongside Apple to create the device.

According to the rumor the Apple Smart Watch will feature a 1.5-inch PMOLED display that will be made by RiTDisplays. Tech.163 also suggests that the device will feature ITO-coated glass.

While Apple has never developed a watch of its own, its iPod nano has been paired with a wrist band to give it the full appeal of a functioning watch.

UmerPrinceDevelopers have showed increasing interest in smart watches, for example the Pebble Smart Watch that showed up on Kickstarter and worked with both iOS and Android connected devices and the Sony Smart Watch which recently debuted.

In the past Bluetooth based watches offered basic functionality such as caller ID, contact lists, etc. Apple would likely attempt to bring more of its iOS interface into the fold, allowing for watch based navigation and other features.

At this time the rumor is unconfirmed. We already known that Apple has been investigating Google type glasses and the company tends to follow the crowd, attempting to build a better product based on already available technologies. Should the Smart Watch market prove even relatively successful in 2013 there is a good chance the watch will debut.

With low-power Bluetooth 4.0 making wearable technology easier to manage there is a good chance that Apple, Google, Microsoft and other tech companies will begin to further explore the wearable tech sector. The real question is whether or not buyers actually want to wear their tech in a non-traditional way.

Would you buy and use an Apple Bluetooth Smart Watch?

Apple Removed A Photo App From The App Store Because Artistic Nudity Is Bad

UmerPrince
500px, one of the best iPad apps for finding great pictures, was pulled from the App Store today because Apple is Tobias Funke never nude-levels of prudish when it comes to the naked body. Apparently, the app made it too easy to find pictures with nudity in them so it got kicked out.

500px was notified of the issue when it tried to get an update to the 500px for iOS app updated. Apple said that the updated couldn’t be approved because users could search for nude pictures in the app. What’s weird is that 500px actually makes it difficult to do so — the app’s search engine is "safe" by default. If you want to unlock the safe search, you’d have to log in to the 500px website to make the change. That seems entirely reasonable.

Apple’s official statement, as relayed to TechCrunch, accuses 500px of something much more nefarious though:
The app was removed from the App Store for featuring pornographic images and material, a clear violation of our guidelines. We also received customer complaints about possible child pornography. We’ve asked the developer to put safeguards in place to prevent pornographic images and material in their app.
Yeah, we know. No porn allowed in the App Store. Whatever. But it’s not like 500px is a cesspool for hardcore pornography. The pictures that you come across in 500px are more artistic than anything you can find on the internet. 500px isn’t the eighth page of Google Search Results or some lonely kid’s fetish Tumblr. It’s one of the most elegant photo apps on iOS and Apple kicked it out of the App Store because of a couple of artistic breasts. Nice. [TechCrunch]

Apple iPhone 5S December Production Test? [Rumor]

Remember when Apple released one new smartphone each year? Those days may be over. Apple is rumored to be preparing test production for its iPhone 5S, a device some experts believe could launch in early 2013.

Chinese-language publication The Commercial Times was the first to report the rumor. While the source is not always the most reliable, it has been known to grab Apple scoops from time to time.

If Apple adhere’s to its typical test production and release schedule that could mean a new iPhone just six months after the last was released.

Apple is also known for updating its iOS software only once per year, a schedule that would likely be disrupted if the company were to announce a six month release for the iPhone 5S.

It is likely that a new iPhone 5S would focus on improved hardware such as a faster processor, better camera, improved GPS, etc. By offering better hardware Apple can showcase device improvements without completely reworking its iOS platform in such a short period of time. Users will however likely see the newest sub-version of iOS on their devices.

Apple could follow in the footsteps of the Google Nexus line by bumping up specs on its device while keeping prices in-line with the current iPhone 5. Perhaps offering more memory, faster speeds or an improved display at no additional cost.

Why Apple would choose to change its production schedule is not known. However, quarter-over-quarter the Google Android OS continues to grab a larger share of the marketplace. Perhaps Apple is moving to a six-month release schedule to ensure that customers coming off of a wireless contract do not become impatient in their wait and simply choose a Samsung, Motorola or LG device.

While the source of the rumor is less than trustworthy, the idea of an iPhone 5s reaching market just six months after the release of the iPhone 5 makes sense in a lot of ways. On the other hand Apple suffered some humiliating production and operating system mistakes with the iPhone 5, perhaps releasing devices even faster without further testing wouldn’t be the best move for Apple.

Apple Sells 3 Million iPads In First 3 Days

Apple walked away with bragging rights over the weekend as holiday shopping sales propelled its line of legacy, 4th generation and iPad mini devices towards more than three million units sold.

The tech giant started its weekend with the iPad mini which now adds Wi-Fi + Cellular data connection options for AT&T, Sprint Wireless and Verizon Wireless. The 4th gen iPad has a starting price of $459 which includes 16GB on-board storage. Moving up in price the 32GB iPad mini unit sets customers back $559, while the 64GB model runs $659.

Rolling out its 4th generation iPad devices with cellular data the company started pricing at $629 for its 16GB model, $729 for the 32GB version and a whopping $829 for 64GB.

Apple also moved some of its older iPad 2 devices thanks to a $399 price point for the original 16GB Wi-Fi only version. Customers could also pick up a 3G version of the iPad 2 for $529 with 16GB and Wi-Fi.

In announcing the three million units mark the company noted that "since the launch of its new iPad(R) mini and fourth generation iPad–double the previous first weekend milestone of 1.5 million Wi-Fi only models sold for the third generation iPad in March."

The iPad mini and fourth generation iPad with Retina display are currently selling in 34 countries including the US, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, South Korea, the UK and others. Apple iPad mini sales have already exceeded supply and Apple only plans to constrain its stock more when the company launched its new device in mainland China before the end of November.

Speaking of the iPad mini’s success Apple CEO Tim Cook says:
"Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad. We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We’re working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand."
The iPad mini ships with a 7.9-inch Multi-Touch(TM) display while the 4th Generation iPad offers a 9.7-inch Retina display and the new Apple-designed A6X chipset
