With the new Facebook free calling app, your voice plan may be obsolete

Last month Facebook rolled out on its standalone messenger app an option to make free voice calls. This same functionality has now been added to its flagship iOS application. The new version 5.5 is currently live in the Apple’s App store and users that live in U.S. and Canada can now call friends for free just by hitting the button on the right hand side bar.
To see the voice-calling option you just have to tap on a friend’s name, the button will then show up on the top right corner of the screen. If that friend happens to be online at that particular time, the “Free call” button should be made clickable for you to dial them directly without having to know their number. In case the friend is not online the button will be grayed out.
Facebook usually uses its standalone app to test out new features on its smaller user base before releasing the final version on the main application.

Facebook started offering voice functionality earlier this year. The social network first began by offering users the ability to send a one minute voice message. Then the features was extended to the iOS and Android messenger applications. The next step was to test an open source VoIP calling option. It was first tested on Canadian iOS Messenger users that were using a data plan and later on the feature was introduced into the U.S market a few weeks later.

We already know the social giant is now willing to charge users for sending messages to strangers on its network. It will not be a surprise if there is also a fee involved in voice calling a stranger.

Apple Removed A Photo App From The App Store Because Artistic Nudity Is Bad

500px, one of the best iPad apps for finding great pictures, was pulled from the App Store today because Apple is Tobias Funke never nude-levels of prudish when it comes to the naked body. Apparently, the app made it too easy to find pictures with nudity in them so it got kicked out.

500px was notified of the issue when it tried to get an update to the 500px for iOS app updated. Apple said that the updated couldn’t be approved because users could search for nude pictures in the app. What’s weird is that 500px actually makes it difficult to do so — the app’s search engine is "safe" by default. If you want to unlock the safe search, you’d have to log in to the 500px website to make the change. That seems entirely reasonable.

Apple’s official statement, as relayed to TechCrunch, accuses 500px of something much more nefarious though:
The app was removed from the App Store for featuring pornographic images and material, a clear violation of our guidelines. We also received customer complaints about possible child pornography. We’ve asked the developer to put safeguards in place to prevent pornographic images and material in their app.
Yeah, we know. No porn allowed in the App Store. Whatever. But it’s not like 500px is a cesspool for hardcore pornography. The pictures that you come across in 500px are more artistic than anything you can find on the internet. 500px isn’t the eighth page of Google Search Results or some lonely kid’s fetish Tumblr. WARNING: Page Administrators Targeted With Scam Messages From ‘Facebook Security Team’

Facebook page administrators are the target of a scam that uses the Facebook Security Team logo to lure them into providing their login information to a third-party application.
According to Facecrooks, the Facebook message pictured below, which appears to be authentic at first glance, warns page admins:

We have reviewed the suspension of your page. After reviewing your page activity, it was determined that you were in violation of our terms of service. We have provided a warning to you via email, but you have not responded to our notification. Therefore, your account might be permanently suspended.

The message then instructs page admins to verify their accounts via a link that opens a third-party app, according to Facecrooks, which added:

Anytime you see a Facebook page in the following format – apps.Facebook.com/app_name_here/ –you should know that you are NOT dealing with an application created by Facebook. Scammers use official-sounding page names, applications, and links to make their schemes appear legitimate to unsuspecting and ill-informed users.

Phishing scams often use multiple domains and tactics, but the end game is always an attempt to obtain your Facebook user name and password.

New Facebook Poke App

Facebook added a new app over the holiday season for messaging. It’s called Poke, which is also the same name as a function that has been part of the site since the beginning. It was a way of waving at other users. The new feature provides complex greetings through either text, photo, or even a short video.

　

You can see the message by holding it until it goes away. These messages are only able to be seen for a few seconds and can be shown to either individuals or groups. This application is supposed to be similar to another app, Snapchat, that has gained popularity in its first year. Right now, Poke is only available on the iPhone as a free downloadable app and is the latest in new Facebook apps geared towards mobile devices. Users can determine how long the message lasts, anywhere from one to ten seconds. The message must be less than 120 characters, which is perfect for a short comment or joke.
