Yahoo Tries to Go Social: Revamps Website with Facebook

It has been a tumultuous couple of years for Yahoo. Though its status as one of the world’s leading search engines and internet companies has not changed, the revenues and profits have been on the decline. The situation has been made worse with the succession of CEOs that have been shown the door or have quit the position themselves. In a bid to reprieve the situation, Yahoo has joined hands with Facebook to revamp its website. In a nutshell, Yahoo is trying to become social.

Yahoo Tries to Go Social: Revamps Website with Facebook

Taking a Cue from Facebook

Over the past few years, Yahoo has been losing out to Google and Facebook. The search engine and social network have been taking away its users. As a result, Yahoo has been losing preference with advertisers as businesses don’t want to spend too much on placing ads on the website. During the same time, the ad revenue for Facebook and Google both has been on the rise. Yahoo has now taken a cue from Facebook to make some changes to its website.
In a bid to emulate the social network, Yahoo has teamed up with it to introduce a few new features that would make it more user-friendly. Now, people would be able to see the pages and other content ‘liked’ by their Facebook friends. A newsfeed feature has also been installed which shows news in the same way as you see updates on Facebook. The overhaul of the website was made public by the current CEO Marissa Mayer.

More Changes Expected

Yahoo is not going to stop the changes to its service offering with the revamp of the website. Some more changes are to be made to their internet shop windows. The changes are currently being worked on and will be revealed in the days to come. Most of all, Yahoo is trying to make itself compatible for mobile users. One area where they have been losing out is the mobile usage. The newer and better Yahoo app would take care of that problem.

What Does Facebook Gain?

Even though Facebook is not a search engine, it is a competitor to Yahoo. One wonders why they teamed up with Yahoo for revamping the website. The answer is pretty simple: the Google factor. Facebook has to contend with Google for ad revenue, both on conventional computers and mobile devices. By helping Yahoo revamp, Facebook might be able to take away some of Google’s visitors. In fact, some experts predict this move would have a positive impact on Facebook’s growing user base.

Final Word

As with all things in the online world, the impact of this move by Yahoo will only be seen in the future. Nothing can be said with certainty regarding whether Yahoo would be able to reclaim its share of online users. The only thing which is becoming somewhat certain is that Marissa Mayer is here to stay. The website revamp is one of several positive steps she has taken to improve Yahoo’s situation. The revenues might not increase immediately but this move is constructive for sure.

Facebook Doesn’t Have to Pay Taxes

Wouldn’t it be nice if you had no taxes to pay, and the same year, received a nearly $430 million tax return on top of $1.1 billion in annual revenue? That would be more than nice, and is currently Facebook’s fortunate situation.

UmerPrince

Facebook Doesn’t Have to Pay Taxes

This shocking revelation ultimately begs the question of “Who is responsible for this oversight?”  Is this just another example of a mega-billion dollar corporation finding tax loopholes to take advantage of the book’s fortunate situation due to the tax deductibility of its executive stock options. According to the group Citizens for Tax Justice, last year many of Facebook’s employees cashed in their stock options. The money received by the employees for cashing in is considered the same as wages by the U.S. government. Which in turn, grants Facebook some very generous tax deductions for each of the stock options that were cashed in.

Facebook is not the first major corporation to use this tax break to its advantage and is just one of many major businesses that are accused of not paying their share of taxes. But Facebook and other corporations can legitimately deduct stock options given to their executives. Many companies whose employees benefit from stock options receive monstrous deductions. There were 26 companies including corporate giants like General Electric, Verizon and Boeing, with total combined profits of $205 billion, that paid zero federal income tax between the years of 2008 and 2011. This stock option loophole will likely prevent Facebook from paying in billions of  dollars in taxes and even allow them to ride for years on these deductions without ever paying in.

Although Facebook isn’t really paying Federal taxes in 2012, it is just remitting the tax on behalf of the employees. This lack of taxation for last fiscal year comes from the fact that restricted stock units are a form of equity compensation. So, in other words, instead of giving the employees stock as incentives, Facebook made a contractual promise to give them shares later, after the I.P.O. settling the limited stock units by withholding the quantity of tax due at an estimated mutual federal and state tax rate of 45 percent.

Regardless of the fact that Facebook’s hefty deductions are legit, average taxpayers may find this news unfair. How do you feel about the tax deductions for executive stock options?

Can Pinterest Become Number 2?

If asked what the most used social networks in the United states are, most of you would immediately name Facebook and Twitter, and you would be right. However, some of you may not realize how close the running is for the second spot.

Pew’s Survey

On Thursday, The Pew Research Center revealed the conclusions of a survey, conducted in late 2012 for its Internet and American Life Project. The post-election survey, which covered the demographics of social media users, had 1802 diverse respondents. The surveyees were interviewed on cellphones and landlines in both English and Spanish.

UmerPrinceCan Pinterest Become Number 2?

The research shows that out of the internet users in the U.S., 67% are members of Facebook, while only 16% use Twitter. This is somewhat surprising considering Twitter gets nearly as much face time and recognition in the media as Facebook. What’s even more surprising is that Pinterest is now hot on Twitters heels, entertaining 15% of internet connected Americans with its theme-based pinboards. Pinterest is not only retaining it’s users, but is gaining them quite steadily, already increasing its percentage of users by three since August of 2012.

Some other interesting tidbits concluded by the survey reveal that of the internet users in the 30-49 age group, 72%  use a social network. Though this percentage is respectable, it paled in comparison to the 18-29 age group’s whopping 83 %. Also while 62% of internet connected men are social networkers, the women dominate the social networks with their 71%.

Pinterest’s appeal

As the research revealed, women are more inclined to use social networks, and that is most true about Pinterest, as last year’s ‘pinners’ were 97% women. Pinterest, like other social sites, has become defined by its users’ content. And American women have filled Pinterest with a hugely expansive library of content on everything from fashion and skincare to cleaning tips, gardening, and crafty D.I.Y. projects.

Because of the girly content, no one is confused by why men don’t typically frequent the sight. But the facts raise these questions. Will female’s love of Pinterest be enough to beat Twitter in the standings, and keep the sight growing? Or will Pinterest eventually need to make changes in order to draw in more social networking men?

Interactive Map Shows Worldwide Foursquare Check-In Data

UmerPrince
Foursquare introduced a mapping feature on Thursday that makes it easier to visualize check-in activity around the world.

The black-and-white interactive map lets Foursquare users search for any region by Zip code and zoom in to discover the density of check-ins in that area, based on data from the 500 million check-ins on the service. Aside from just being a cool feature, it shows the potential Foursquare has to use its massive amount of data to map out real-world activity and make recommendations to users about where to go next.

"What makes Foursquare Explore so powerful is that all those check-ins you see aren't just single points — they're links between all the other places people have been, too," the company said in a blog post announcing the feature. "We like to think of it as our version of Google PageRank for the real world — we're working to understand the billions of invisible connections between places so we can make amazing recommendations."

Just imagine how effective it would be for the company to target restaurant recommendations to those who have just come from a concert based on where others have enjoyed eating after leaving that venue in the past. If Foursquare can harness all its data into these kind of recommendations, it could prove incredibly useful for attracting advertisers and boosting the company's revenues in the future.

HOW TO: Play a Trick On Your Friends in Your Status Update

We have a funny one to end on -- a way to play an amusing trick on your Facebook buddies.

This clever link "FbURL" looks like it could be a URL for anyone's Facebook profile, actually takes anyone logged into Facebook to their own profile page.

If you try it out, be sure to remove the link preview that Facebook auto-ads. Have fun, and don't be too mean...
UmerPrince
.

HOW TO: See Your Status Update Stats

UmerPrince

Have you ever wondered how many times you have updated your status on Facebook? The Facebook app Status Statistics, can tell you this and more.

The app analyzes your updates and gives you a tidy list of how many you've written, the average word count and how many times a day you post. In addition, it generates a graph that shows you what time of day or what days of the week you normally update.

Old statuses are also searchable via the app, so you can find that witty retort you made back in November 2009 without having to scroll back through your history.
.

HOW TO: See Status Updates From Around the World

If you want to get a glimpse of the thoughts of Facebook users from around the world's, head over to OpenBook.

Created by three San Fran web developers with a serious privacy message in mind, the site aggregates the status updates of everyone whose privacy levels are set to "everyone."
You can narrow your searchable results down by gender and keywords to find out what people are saying about a certain topic. Or you can just browse the recent searches.
UmerPrince
.

HOW TO: Have Fun With Facebook's Humorous Language Options

While you can always change your setting into more sensible alternative languages, the site offers a couple of fun linguistic Easter eggs.

You can chose to have Facebook display upside down English, or, for anyone feeling a little salty, in "pirate." Pirate essentially turns your status into your "plank," your attachments into "loot" and instead of "share" it offers the option to "blabber t' yer mates."

Sadly, anything you type in the status bar won't be upside down, or pirate-y. But with the use of some external sites you can achieve the same effect.
UmerPrince

HOW TO: Turn Your Status Updates Into a Word Cloud

There's a really fun way to visualize anyone's status updates (even an entire country's) as a word cloud. The Status Analyzer 3D app will look at what it is you've been chatting about lately and generate a list, and then a pretty, colorful, animated cloud as pictured above.

You can share the results with others on the social networking site by posting it to your friends' walls or by adding it to your profile.

UmerPrince

HOW TO: Add Symbols to Your Facebook Status

Although there are plenty of emoticons that work with Facebook Chat, typing ":)" into Facebook's status bar will not magically transform into a smiley yellow face. In fact, the only symbol you can create in a Facebook status update through the shortcut keys is a ♥, by typing "While this won't bother many Facebook users, others more used to punctuating their missives can copy and paste web-happy, universal symbols into the box, as you can see in the screengrab above.

PC users can also access some symbols by hitting "alt" + various number combinations (on a numerical keypad). So, while smileys are yet to hit Facebook statuses, you can annoy or amuse your buddies with symbols right now.
UmerPrince

HOW TO: Tag People in Your Status Updates

UmerPrince
This was quite a big deal when it was announced this past September, but from the amount of searches on the topic "how can I make someone's name go blue in a Facebook status?" it seems it's not universally known.

To mention someone in a status update just type "@" (a la Twitter) in the status bar and start typing their name as it appears on Facebook. An auto-generated list will then come up with people in your social circle whose name starts with the letters you've typed. The feature also works with pages, brands, events and companies.

Hit the name you want, complete the update, click share and the name will become a hyperlink (you won't see the @ symbol) and will appear in blue text.

HOW TO: Pre-Schedule Status Updates

While SocialOomph, Sendible and HootSuite offer the same kind of service, the simplest way to schedule Facebook status updates is by using the easy, free Later Bro service.

Just sign in with Facebook Connect, select your time zone, type in what it is you'd like to say, set the calendar and clock to when you'd like to say it, and presto!
UmerPrince

HOW TO: Hide Status Updates From Certain People

Using Facebook's general privacy settings (find these by hitting "account" on the top right of a Facebook page) you can select whether everyone, just friends or friends of friends can see your status updates. However, there is a way to narrow those options down even further.

You can select specific friend lists to see your status (relevant for work, special interest groups, etc.) or even individual people by name, which is useful for anyone organizing a surprise party.

To take advantage of these options, click the padlock icon just below your "what's on your mind" box on your wall and a drop down menu should appear. Selecting "customize" will bring up more options such as "make this visible to" and "hide from" with the option to make your selection a default.

UmerPrince

HOW TO: Add a Dislike Option to Your Status Update

"Like" buttons are everywhere on Facebook, and they're everywhere on the web. But what if you want to update your status or share something that your friends can "dislike?" We know,
your friends can choose to "comment" on your post, but where's the fun in that?

The clever Status Magic Facebook app can add a dislike button to any status updates posted via the app.

And if you wanted to really mix it up you can actually customize the second emotion to anything, such as "love," "hate," "disagree" or even "LOLs."
