As Android is open source,Google gives this Android operating system to mobile companies at free of cost.

Android is based on Linux Kernel,which later was stressed by Google beyond the limits to achieve high performance.

Google Android Logo was designed from Atari game called Gauntlet.

Transparent smart phone may be ready earlier than you think

With Polytron Technologies, it should be possible that in the near future your phone becomes so transparent that you would find it difficult to see it. A manufacturer based in Taiwan has released a prototype of this futuristic phone with the hope that one day it becomes the first transparent handset.
The material used to make this product which is still at its early stage is called Polyvision Privacy Glass. When that glass is off, nobody can see through but once it is turned on the electric current passing through makes it transparent enough for people to see through. On the Polytron website one can read a statement explaining that the glass is made of liquid crystal molecules and when electricity passes through it, the molecules line up in the way that incident light can pass through and that is why the Polyvision looks clear.

Transparent smart phone

The glass itself may be transparent when switched on but the SIM card and battery are still not. So the device is not completely see-through once the battery and SIM card are inserted in.
For now the Taiwanese company has only come up with the hardware to show the possibilities. It has no operating system running on it. It is just a translucent concept design with a multi-touch display with dual sides. That said according to Polytron’s general manager, Sam Yu, the technnology is mature and all phone manufacturers are willing to work with them.
You may have thought that transparent phone may come to be in the far future. That may not be the case. How about the end of this year? At least the company Polytron hopes to be able to produced a limited edition of a fully transparent and functional smart phone by that time, according to Mobile Geeks.

Firefox OS: A New Alternative for Smartphones

The new Firefox OS was able to capture some of the spotlight at this year’s Mobile World Congress.  Mozilla held a press conference highlighting its Firefox OS and also outlining their vision for the future. The question is whether a Firefox OS, or any other for that matter, would be able to compete with mobile giants iOS and Android.

At first look, Firefox OS is similar to both Android and iOS. The user first views multiple apps on a screen. You can slide right or left to view other apps. The bottom of each page also has four permanent apps, including the phone, a messaging app, the camera app, and of course, the Firefox browser.  Perhaps most interestingly, Mozilla has touted their platform’s flexibility, which will allow different carriers to easily tailor the interface and develop localized services.

There is clearly interest in the concept of what a new OS could bring to the market.  The talk of new mobile operating systems at Mobile World Congress has already generated a lot of interest.  Firefox OS appears to be uniquely poised to tackle the emerging markets. They already have global partners with Deutsche Telekom, Telenor, Telefonica, and China Mobile.  Mozilla announced that while additional markets will be announced soon, the first wave of devices will be available in Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela.

While Firefox OS is getting a lot of attention, they were not the only alternative OS at Mobile World Congress.  There were other alternative OS presentations, including those by Ubuntu and Tizen.  However, Firefox already has the power of name recognition, Firefox browser, and global support.  If you are interested in getting a Firefox OS phone, then you won’t have too long to wait.  ZTE is planning to launch a Firefox OS phone in 2013.

US Bans Smartphone Unlocking

A ban making it illegal for Americans to unlock their smartphone, so it runs on more than one mobile network, has gone into effect.

Smartphone users in the US now officially have to get permission to unlock their smartphone, following a ruling handed down by the Librarian of Congress – the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution.

Up until January 26, US consumers were able to ask their carrier to unlock the phone under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), but this right has now been removed.

Alternatively, users could buy unlocked versions from manufacturers, but these handsets were normally more expensive than those locked to one network.

Petition launched to US Government

In relation to the hotly-contested change, a We the People petition to the US Government has been set up against the new ruling. Nearly 33,000 people have so far signed it.

The Make Unlocking Cell Phones Legal petition says: “Consumers will be forced to pay exorbitant roaming fees to make calls while traveling abroad. It reduces consumer choice and decreases the resale value of devices that consumers have paid for in full.

“We ask that the White House ask the Librarian of Congress to rescind this decision, and failing that, champion a bill that makes unlocking permanently legal.”

The petition needs about 67,000 more signatures by February 23 this year to reach its goal of 100,000. It will then cross the second threshold and require a response from the US Government.

‘Infringing on firmware copyrights’

The ban on unlocking phones was first announced in October last year by the Librarian of Congress, which found that the procedure amounted to infringing on firmware copyrights.

Smartphone users were given a 90-day time limit that made it legal to unlock phones without permission.

Pop-up sites

Several online services offering to unlock phones for a small fee now seem to have surfaced, and some have said the change will not impact them.

One US registered website openly says it can ‘unlock any iPhone’ and claims its software can find the ‘best unlocking solution’ to do the job.

mPrinter: A Tiny Printer for the Smartphone

While there are various ways to print from your smartphone, the mPrinter offers a convenient new choice.

The mPrinter features a simple design with practical use as the core of its function. It can be used with either Javascript or WYSIWYG text editor to print small bits of information. No special connection is required: it works through a Wi-Fi connection.

　


The printer has a built-in Wi-Fi web server and a thermal printer. You can use it to print straight from any device that has a Wi-Fi connection or print a web page with just one additional line of code. It also allows users to share what is called mPrints, or small bits of data such as weather reports and shopping lists.

This unique little device was designed by Andy Muldowney in his kitchen. He has experience in hardware design, iOS development, and web programming. He hired developers to assist with designing the case because he wanted it to look as good on the kitchen counter as in an office.

Muldowney put the project on Kickstarter and found open source hardware that was cost-effective for the prototype. He got over $20,000 of crowdsource funding for his project and expects it to be ready to get in the hands of his backers and consumers around February.
