Wal-Mart Expands Self-Checkout Service With iPhones

You can crack all the jokes you want about Wal-Mart, particularly about “Wal-Mart speak”, but you can’t deny the impact of this chain, both on those in the industry and on consumers. More so, for an “old” company, Wal-Mart does seem to be on the ball when it comes to taking on new technologies to improve its services. (Here is where the “What service?” jokes come in.)
Wal-Mart Scan & Go
All kidding aside, Wal-Mart’s Scan & Go program is in its early stages, with a handful of stores running it. The program essentially allows customers to do self-checkout by using their iPhones to scan the items they are buying. After scanning the items, customers can then proceed to self-checkout counter to pay.
The concept is very attractive. For one, it takes advantage of the fact that most people have smartphones. Customers only have to use the Wal-Mart app to scan their items, leaving out the middleman that is the cashier, who can be tediously slow at times. There is the inconvenience – at least to non-iPhone users – that there is only an iOS app for now, but Wal-Mart says that they are still testing the system and getting feedback from customers and that they are planning on rolling out an Android app soon.
It looks like Wal-Mart may have something with the Scan & Go project, especially with customers in the pilot program using the app repeatedly. Additionally, the chain is adding the system to more stores. Given that Wal-Mart has thousands of branches nationwide, the number of stores that will be featuring Scan & Go is but a small fraction, but the development is still an indication of positive response from customers.
With Wal-Mart leading the way in this matter, I wouldn’t be surprised if other stores actually do a copycat act by establishing their own self-checkout service. And this is one of those times when copying benefits the general public.

Cool Futuristic/Concept Gadgets That Really Inspire

About 10 years ago, we didn’t really expect the 1.4mb 3.5 inch floppy to evolve into flash drives 10x smaller with storage capacity as big as 32gb. The interesting thing about technology is; it’s just going to get more and more high-end but the size, is just going to get smaller and slimmer.
These concept gadgets you see before you today, have extremely high chance of getting into production anywhere in the future. For example, Microsoft’s Surface Computing Technology certainly tells us they are for real. Here’s some really cool concept gadgets, just concepts for now but we really hope it’ll be implemented, that inspires.

Chrome, Firefox, Java, IE10 exploited at Pwn2Own competition

During the first day of Pwn2Own competition at the CanSecWest conference in Vancouver , latest versions of all major browsers were exploited by hackers.
Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8 were successfully pwned by various competitors, bringing them tens of thousands of dollars in prizes.
French vulnerability research and bug selling firm 'Vupen' brought down IE10 running on a Windows 8 powered Surface Pro tablet by exploiting a pair of flaws.
Researchers Jon Butler and Nils from MWR Labs managed to exploit Google Chrome on Windows 7 and also used a kernel bug to bypass the sandbox.
Chrome exploit demonstrates at Pwn2Own

"By visiting a malicious webpage, it was possible to exploit a vulnerability which allowed us to gain code execution in the context of the sandboxed renderer process. We also used a kernel vulnerability in the underlying operating system in order to gain elevated privileges and to execute arbitrary commands outside of the sandbox with system privileges." they said. For this pwn they received $100,000 as reward.
The Java was also killed in Pwn2Own, Java cracked up to three times by three different hackers. Vupen also managed to exploit a vulnerability in Java, "Writing exploits in general is getting much harder. Java is really easy because there's no sandbox."
According to the participants, Chrome was the hardest target because of its sandbox and Java was the easiest target this year.

Transparent smart phone may be ready earlier than you think

With Polytron Technologies, it should be possible that in the near future your phone becomes so transparent that you would find it difficult to see it. A manufacturer based in Taiwan has released a prototype of this futuristic phone with the hope that one day it becomes the first transparent handset.
The material used to make this product which is still at its early stage is called Polyvision Privacy Glass. When that glass is off, nobody can see through but once it is turned on the electric current passing through makes it transparent enough for people to see through. On the Polytron website one can read a statement explaining that the glass is made of liquid crystal molecules and when electricity passes through it, the molecules line up in the way that incident light can pass through and that is why the Polyvision looks clear.

Transparent smart phone
Transparent smart phone
The glass itself may be transparent when switched on but the SIM card and battery are still not. So the device is not completely see-through once the battery and SIM card are inserted in.
For now the Taiwanese company has only come up with the hardware to show the possibilities. It has no operating system running on it. It is just a translucent concept design with a multi-touch display with dual sides. That said according to Polytron’s general manager, Sam Yu, the technnology is mature and all phone manufacturers are willing to work with them.
You may have thought that transparent phone may come to be in the far future. That may not be the case. How about the end of this year? At least the company Polytron hopes to be able to produced a limited edition of a fully transparent and functional smart phone by that time, according to Mobile Geeks.
Are you hoping to be one of the first to use those transparent handset? Or the idea of losing it because you can’t find it frighten you more? This type of phone is certainly not for those who don’t know how to take good care of their mobile device.
What is Polyvision Privacy Glass exactly?
Polyvision Privacy Glass was actually invented by the Company Polytronix that has been researching into it for the past 20 years. It is the most stable and advanced type of Glass that has been designed to give privacy to any user whenever he desires. The glass has already been used in several construction projects in over 68 different countries. What makes this glass stand out is its ability to turn cloudy when no electric current is passing through.
Imagine a shop with these types of Glasses. When there is the need to exposed the items inside the shop to the public, the shop attended can choose to make the glass transparent so that any potential consumer can see what is inside. Then in the evening the shop attended can turn the glass off again. This is an easy way to replace window blinds.
The technology is already in used in households so it shouldn’t be a surprise if it is now coming into phones. Very soon the phones that we’ve been seeing in science fiction movies will be available to the average person. Let’s get ready for it.

Yahoo attempted a comeback with the redesign of its homepage

After 4 years of not really getting noticed, Yahoo has decided to redesign its homepage. It is not a complete redesign of the whole page but it does have some notable new features. The redesign has been extended to the mobile devices too.
On the upper left corner, just like in the previous page design, the main menu of Yahoo services still sits there. That said the carousel that used to show the news and trending articles is much wider.
If anything, the most notable feature is noticed when the user scrolls down the page. Just like other social networks like Facebook and Google Plus, Yahoo has added infinite scrolling to its page. That is probably a smart way to keep the readers attention to the page.
Another feature that is interesting is the fact that Yahoo now allows its users to customize the news. Apparently the website wants to know the taste of its users and gives them the power to remove news items that they are not interested reading. The idea is, over time, Yahoo wants to learn from its users habit and serve them news according to their interest.
The right side of the page is also customizable. It displays utilities or widgets that show things like the weather, sport news and finance. It is also on that side that featured videos and Flickr photos are shown. Again the user has the option to shut down those utilities if he wishes to.

Some people admitted they find the new page dynamic and much more personalized. The fact that the news can now be personalized increases the chances that people come back to the homepage more often. The new page is also constantly refreshing itself with new, useful information. The new page design was unveiled by the new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer on the NBC’s today show.
There has been a lot of changes occurring at Yahoo ever since the new CEO Marissa Mayer was appointed. Mayer has spent 13 years of her life with Google where she worked as an engineer and product manager. She was offered the position of CEO at Yahoo in 2012. From that point on there has been a lot of reshuffling and restructuring of the company. Under her directives, Yahoo even extended a hand to old employees that do not work for the company anymore. Mayer is definitely doing her best to revive the company that has turned out not to be as popular as the other big giants like Facebook, Twitter and Google.
As a side note it was kind of weird that Yahoo unveiled its new page redesign on NBC’s Today show considering the fact that the company already had a partnership with ABC which runs the show Good Morning America. The other fact is the ABC’s Good Morning America beats the NBC’s Today show in viewership. It has conquered the largest audience it could get since the past 7 years.
What do you think about the new Yahoo redesign? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

With the new Facebook free calling app, your voice plan may be obsolete

Last month Facebook rolled out on its standalone messenger app an option to make free voice calls. This same functionality has now been added to its flagship iOS application. The new version 5.5 is currently live in the Apple’s App store and users that live in U.S. and Canada can now call friends for free just by hitting the button on the right hand side bar.
To see the voice-calling option you just have to tap on a friend’s name, the button will then show up on the top right corner of the screen. If that friend happens to be online at that particular time, the “Free call” button should be made clickable for you to dial them directly without having to know their number. In case the friend is not online the button will be grayed out.
Facebook usually uses its standalone app to test out new features on its smaller user base before releasing the final version on the main application.

Facebook started offering voice functionality earlier this year. The social network first began by offering users the ability to send a one minute voice message. Then the features was extended to the iOS and Android messenger applications. The next step was to test an open source VoIP calling option. It was first tested on Canadian iOS Messenger users that were using a data plan and later on the feature was introduced into the U.S market a few weeks later.
With its new voice calling feature it is obvious that Facebook is not much interested in strengthening its partnership with skype which had powered Facebook’s voice calling tests on the desktop in the past.

Entering voice messaging and VoIP world could be a way for Facebook to kick out the default calling apps on smartphones. Facebook knows that if it wants to remain the biggest social network, it can’t just limit itself to just news feeds and profiles. Knowing who a user is close enough to to exchange voice recordings and calls with will help Facebook determine which Friends on your “Friends’ list” you are really close to. This information can then help the social network improve on its algorithm in such a way that your news feed becomes more relevant in relation to the friends that matter to you.

If that plan should succeed there are more chances that users start using Facebook for friend to friend communication. Having this friend to friend free voice calls going on could open another revenue stream for Facebook. We already know the social giant is now willing to charge users for sending messages to strangers on its network. It will not be a surprise if there is also a fee involved in voice calling a stranger.
Eventually this Facebook feature might be able to kill the calling aspect of the smartphone. As at now iPhone and iPad users should be able to download the latest update from iTunes. Android users will have to wait for a while as the Facebook team is testing it out first.

Huawei Ascend P2: The fastest android phone yet

Huawei, the company manufacturing phones and other types of electronic devices has now come up with a new phone called the Ascend P2. One would have thought the company would have referred to it as the world’s thinnest phone with its 0.31 inch thickness but apparently Huawei prefered to boost about the hardware that this phone is made of. The company claims to have designed the world’s fastest phone.
The super thin device displays a 4.7 inch screen and runs on Android 4.1 with a quad-core processor of 1.5GHz speed. That is not the only hardware that makes this phone fast, its LTE cat4 chip enables it to also offer to its user an internet speed of 150 megabits per second (Mbps). That is 10 times faster that what you get from an iPhone 5. At least that is what the company says. This 4G LTE technology will not be available for most users anyway since there are not many networks offering it yet but it is still interesting to know that the phone is already designed for it.

The phone offers 2 cameras, one on the front and one on the back. The back camera is a 13 megapixel sensor with HDR shooting. The battery is a 2,420 mAh. It is quite surprising Huawei didn’t try to recapture its title of thinnest phone that it claimed with the Ascend P1. The P2 still remains quite thin with a better hardware that is.
When it comes to the screen the company also promises a high contrast to enable users to use it outdoor on a sunny day. It doesn’t end there, it comes with a 85-degree viewing angle, a brightness of 500 nits and a Gorilla Glass 2 on top of it to makes sure it doesn’t easily get scratched. Yet the screen is sensitive enough that one could use it even when wearing gloves. The P2 has a sleek look and a glossy finish with a screen that extends to the edges giving the display an expansive feel.

There is one weak point though compared to other high end phones. That is the screen resolution is 1,280 x 720 instead of 1,920 x 1,280 but to defend itself Huawei explained that the human eye can’t see that much higher resolution.
When it comes to the camera, one can take a shot just by double clicking the handset camera button. There is also a facial recognition technology that enables the phone to recognize faces and group them into categories and the user can even choose to associate them with his contacts recorded in the phone. Aside the HDR mode the camera is also backside illuminated to improve its performance even when the ambient light is low.
With the 16 GB internal memory integrated you might not need to buy an SD card for a very long time.
It is quite interesting that when looking at certain a distance, this phone does not seem to have any outer navigation button. For those who took a hold of the device, they noticed that is was extremely light, with a longer, slimmer profile that is easy to hold in the hand.
The device is expected for the second quarter of this year. The exact price has not yet been revealed but its been estimated to be around 399 euros ($525). For U.S. users they will have to order it online.

The Samsung Galaxy S IV Unveiled on March 14

One of the most anticipated devices of the year was notably absent at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. While many people who would have loved to get a glimpse of the Samsung Galaxy S IV at this year’s Mobile World Congress may have been disappointed, it has now been announced that the wait to see Samsung’s most important mobile device is almost over.

The Samsung Galaxy S IV

The Samsung Galaxy S IV will be unveiled on March 14 at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.
This is the first U.S. launch of Samsung’s flagship phone in three years. The Galaxy S III was released last year in London. The move appears to be Samsung’s way of asserting their relevance in their battle with Apple for the mobile market.  While Apple may have the advantage over Samsung Electronics in the U.S. handset market, Samsung is a global giant, with a wide advantage over their rival in global markets. For their part, Samsung Electronics’ mobile division chief JK Shin, stated that Samsung changed the venue for the release to New York due to heavy requests from U.S. mobile carriers.

The Samsung Galaxy S IV Unveiled on March 14
A Samsung Galaxy S IV Concept Design by Rahul Sharma

The device specifications will not be released until the grand unveiling at Radio City Music Hall.  However, there are many rumors about regarding the features of the Galaxy S IV.  The device is thought to have a 4.99’’ full HD screen and a 13-megapixel camera.  For those unfamiliar with the previous version of the Galaxy, those specs include both a higher resolution display and camera than the former version.  The Galaxy S IV is also expected to have a faster quad-core processor.  Rumor has it that it will have an Exynos 5 8-core processor. The device is also expected to run on Android 4.2.2 and have 2GB of RAM. Of course, the official specifications could be different, and we will have to wait to get the full details when the phone is unveiled on March 14.

NASA’s Rover Curiosity Has a Computer Glitch

Even space robots can have a bad day.  At least, that’s the latest news coming from NASA regarding Curiosity, the Mars rover.  Curiosity suffered a glitch and had to go into a protective “safe mode.”

It all started when its handlers noticed that there was a problem with the rover’s flash memory on the primary “A-side” computer.  When Curiosity’s handlers switched the rover to its backup computer, it went into a low activity state, a protective “safe mode.”  Curiosity’s handlers are still unsure of the reason for the glitch.

NASA's Rover Curiosity Has a Computer Glitch

NASA engineers have speculated that one possible cause of the glitch could have been impact by a cosmic ray, which is a high-energy charged particle.  Though Curiosity is created with radiation tolerant gear, it can still be vulnerable to damage from cosmic rays.  NASA has indicated that this type of problem has occurred in the past with other pieces of memory on other missions. However, they also report that cosmic ray damage is generally short lived.  Engineers believe that the problem could disappear once the A-side computer is turned back on.

However, the rover is on the way to recovery and is back out of safe mode.  It has resumed using its high-gain antenna and is expected to soon return to its mission.  NASA has stated that Curiosity is the most complex robotic explorer ever sent to another planet. Curiosity on a quest to find out if Mars was ever capable of sustaining microbial life.  It  landed on Mars last August and is on a two-year mission.  In Curiosity’s $2.5 billion quest to investigate the habitability of Mars, the one ton robot has already found multiple signs of the planet’s past exposure to liquid water, including a streambed.  Let’s hope that the glitch can be quickly fixed, so that Curiosity can get back to its important work of satisfying our Curiosity about the possibility of life on Mars.

Firefox OS: A New Alternative for Smartphones

The new Firefox OS was able to capture some of the spotlight at this year’s Mobile World Congress.  Mozilla held a press conference highlighting its Firefox OS and also outlining their vision for the future. The question is whether a Firefox OS, or any other for that matter, would be able to compete with mobile giants iOS and Android.

Firefox OS: A New Alternative for Smartphones

At first look, Firefox OS is similar to both Android and iOS. The user first views multiple apps on a screen. You can slide right or left to view other apps. The bottom of each page also has four permanent apps, including the phone, a messaging app, the camera app, and of course, the Firefox browser.  Perhaps most interestingly, Mozilla has touted their platform’s flexibility, which will allow different carriers to easily tailor the interface and develop localized services.

There is clearly interest in the concept of what a new OS could bring to the market.  The talk of new mobile operating systems at Mobile World Congress has already generated a lot of interest.  Firefox OS appears to be uniquely poised to tackle the emerging markets. They already have global partners with Deutsche Telekom, Telenor, Telefonica, and China Mobile.  Mozilla announced that while additional markets will be announced soon, the first wave of devices will be available in Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela.

While Firefox OS is getting a lot of attention, they were not the only alternative OS at Mobile World Congress.  There were other alternative OS presentations, including those by Ubuntu and Tizen.  However, Firefox already has the power of name recognition, Firefox browser, and global support.  If you are interested in getting a Firefox OS phone, then you won’t have too long to wait.  ZTE is planning to launch a Firefox OS phone in 2013.

With the incredible content offered on iTunes U, students can learn like never before―there are now iTunes U courses with more than 250,000 students enrolled in them, which is a phenomenal shift in the way we teach and learn.”
iTunes U
The Apple iTunes program has been so successful that more than 1,200 universities and colleges around the country have enrolled more than 100,000 students in single iTunes U courses. According to a press release from Apple:

“Stanford University and The Open University have each surpassed 60 million content downloads. The Ohio State University’s Matthew “Dr. Fus” Stoltzfus’ General Chemistry course enrolled over 100,000 iTunes U students in the first year it was offered.”
While the program offers courses from many US institutions, more than 60 percent of all iTunes U app downloads originate from outside of the United States.
The goal of the program is too educate the masses while at the same time provided international recognition and acclaim for US schools and top teachers in their respective fields.
iTunes U courses can currently be created by teachers in 30 countries including  Brazil, South Korea, Turkey and United Arab Emirates. The courses after being created can then be accessed via the iTunes U app in 155 countries.
Apple notes that aside from iTunes U the company hosts more than 75,000 educational apps that provide free and cheap learning materials in many cases.

The program has been so successful that Professor Stokols, whose Environmental Psychology course enrolls over 170,000 students, had this to say about iTunes U:

“Because of iTunes U, I have been able to introduce students and colleagues in China to research on the links between chronic multi-tasking, information overload and stress; discuss research publications and degree programs with students in Europe; and exchange information about the influence of neighborhood design on community levels of physical activity and obesity with students in Australia. The opportunity to impact so many students who are gaining interest in environmental psychology by taking my free course on iTunes U has been highly rewarding and gratifying for me as an educator and learner.”
Do you see the value in more teachers implementing iTunes U based courses around the world?
