The Samsung Galaxy S IV Unveiled on March 14

One of the most anticipated devices of the year was notably absent at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. While many people who would have loved to get a glimpse of the Samsung Galaxy S IV at this year’s Mobile World Congress may have been disappointed, it has now been announced that the wait to see Samsung’s most important mobile device is almost over.



The Samsung Galaxy S IV will be unveiled on March 14 at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.
This is the first U.S. launch of Samsung’s flagship phone in three years. The Galaxy S III was released last year in London. The move appears to be Samsung’s way of asserting their relevance in their battle with Apple for the mobile market.  While Apple may have the advantage over Samsung Electronics in the U.S. handset market, Samsung is a global giant, with a wide advantage over their rival in global markets. For their part, Samsung Electronics’ mobile division chief JK Shin, stated that Samsung changed the venue for the release to New York due to heavy requests from U.S. mobile carriers.

The device specifications will not be released until the grand unveiling at Radio City Music Hall.  However, there are many rumors about regarding the features of the Galaxy S IV.  The device is thought to have a 4.99’’ full HD screen and a 13-megapixel camera.  For those unfamiliar with the previous version of the Galaxy, those specs include both a higher resolution display and camera than the former version.  The Galaxy S IV is also expected to have a faster quad-core processor.  Rumor has it that it will have an Exynos 5 8-core processor. The device is also expected to run on Android 4.2.2 and have 2GB of RAM. Of course, the official specifications could be different, and we will have to wait to get the full details when the phone is unveiled on March 14.

Yes, the first 8.0 inch tablet with SIM calling capabilities has been launched by Samsung. Dubbed as the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, the device packs its flagship item called S-Pen. The tablet packs 8 inch WXGA display with 1.6 GHz quad core cortex A9 processor, Android 4.1.2, 5 megapixel camera, 1.3 megapixel front facing camera, 2GB RAM and 4600 mAH battery. The tablet will be released in two variants according to their internal memory.

Huawei Ascend P2 – Affordable, slim and big battery smartphone

Huawei has launched a new Android smartphone Ascend P2 which packs 4.7 inch IPS LCD display with 1280×720 pixels resolutions and approximately 312 ppi. It has 1.5 GHz quad core processor with 1 GB RAM, 16 GB internal memory, 13 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front facing camera and video recording at 1080p HD (for rear camera).

Alcatel One Touch Idol X – Surprise to all

Alcatel launched a massive One Touch Idol X Android smartphone which came as a surprise for many of us. The device boosts a 5 inch display with 1080 x 1920 pixels resolutions and 441 ppi. Although it has 1.2 GHz quad core processor which is slightly lower than that of Huawei Ascend P2, the display with excellent resolutions is real beauty. The device also packs 13 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front facing camera and a 2000mAH battery.

The Lumia 720 is priced at around $330 and will initially be sold in the Asia-Pacific market. The device packs a 4.3 inch Clear Black display, 1 GHz dual core processor, 2000 mAH battery, 512 MB RAM, 8 GB built-in storage which is expandable up to 64GB via micro SD card. It features a 6.7 megapixel rear camera at the back and 1.3 megapixel front camera. The Lumia 720 will be available in a variety of colors and exchangeable panels – red, yellow, cyan, magenta, etc.
The Lumia 520 packs 4 inch WVGA display, 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM and a 5MP rear camera which is capable of recording videos at 720p. The expected price for the Nokia Lumia 520 is $180.

Samsung Galaxy Young with Jelly Bean at MWC 2013

Samsung has announced a new budget Android smartphone called the Samsung Galaxy Young which is preloaded with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Although the device packs a 1 GHz single core processor & 512 MB RAM, it’s really surprising to see Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on it. The screen resolution is relatively low with 480×320 pixels too.

Asus PadFone Infinity

Asus has unveiled the PadFone family of devices with a full HD 10.1 inch PadFone infinity tablet and a 5 inch smartphone. The smartphone packs a 5 inch display with 1920×1080 resolutions and an amazing 441 ppi. It has a 1.7 GHz quad core processor, 13 megapixel camera, 2 megapixel front facing camera and NFC support. The tablet from the PadFone infinity family packs 10.1 inch full HD display with 1920×1200 resolutions.

Samsung Galaxy Note To Receive Jelly Bean 4.1

Samsung Galaxy Note users will soon have access to the Google Android Jelly Bean 4.1 upgrade. A rumor for the update to the first Note Phablet was first mentioned in August but then laid dormant until today.

The new upgrade arrives just as Samsung begins to launch its new premium suite, a software option that aims to improve Google Android functionality. Samsung previously confirmed that its premium suite software would arrive for the Galaxy S III smartphone and the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. By adding the software to the Note the company effectively covers the smartphone, phablet and tablet markets.

A page for the Galaxy Note upgrade was spotted by Engadget and showcases some impressive features. Among new options will be Multi Windows support, the ability to take advantage of pop-up notes, new video support and multiple browser windows.

The premium suite upgrade also brings with it Photo Note and Photo Frame apps, a new cropping system that is suppose to be easier to use and handwriting support on S Planner and the Email client.

The S Note has also been given a larger set of templates and effects and it adds the Paper Artist app which allows for photo editing via the devices S Pen sytlus.

Google Now will be the featured item on the Google Android 4.1 update when it reached users devices.

Samsung has not announced when the Google Android 4.1 upgrade will roll out for Samsung Note users, however because the update relies on wireless carrier support it is likely that some users will receive the update before others.

We expect the Note’s Android 4.1 update to arrive sooner then later as the device continues to age itself out of the market

Samsung Working on Flexible Phone with Less Battery Use

Samsung has been working on a flexible phone screen that bends and is nearly unbreakable while still being lightweight. What makes it even better is that it uses less battery power, which is one of the biggest complaints for any mobile device user.

The screens are supposed to be ready for release in the early half of 2013 and are made from organic light-emitting diodes. This new design is being seen as Samsung’s way of staying competitive in a continually changing environment. The competition has been on creating higher resolution displays but flexible screens with less battery use would put Samsung in another category altogether.

 

The Issues with Flexible Screens

There is concern that the materials used to create these screens could expand and contract at different rates when they heat up or cool down, which could cause breaking or damage. There is also the issue with encapsulating the materials in the OLEDs because they degrade when they are exposed to air. Flexible encapsulation poses more issues than when working with glass.

Samsung is not the first company to attempt to create a flexible screen. In fact, Sony demonstrated one back in 2010 and even Samsung had one to show last year. Manufacturing issues keep the companies from progressing. Besides a flexible screen, you will have to get flexible circuit boards and other components.

It often takes several years to move new technology along to the point where it’s ready to show to the customer. Then you have to figure a way to get it mass produced, so even if Samsung does have something to show in 2013, customers probably won’t get to enjoy the benefits for a few years yet. However, it will still be fun to see how it works.
