The Tablet

The Transformer AiO is one of the biggest Android tablets right now. Packing a monstrous 18.4 inch display of Full HD resolution, its supported by a kickstand for convenience and is 0.7 inches thick.

IE10 Finally Coming to Windows 7

"Friends don’t let friends use internet explorer," is a popular phrase in the meme world, but that can change when Microsoft finally releases Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7. Although the beta version (Internet Explorer 10 preview for Windows 7) was introduced last November, the final build is yet to see the light of day. However, recently Microsoft has sent private e-mail messages to select testers, asking them to notify Microsoft in case of any issues with the preview version.

　
The message also says that no date can yet be announced for the release of the final build, but the select testers should hurry up in case they have something to report. This means that the product has entered its final stages, and will be released soon.

In a highly competitive and somewhat saturated market, where the likes of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari are always competing for greater market share, the Internet Explorer 10 could provide Microsoft with a much needed advantage.

The IE10 has already been bundled with Windows 8 and Windows RT, but it has never come together for Windows 7. Initially a test build was introduced to users in 2011, and then an improved test build was introduced in 2012. Judging from the email, the final build could come out any time during the next couple of months. However, these are speculations.

　
Since internet explorer is already fully functional in Windows 8, the delay in its release for Windows 7 can be attributed to the difference between the technologies used in both Windows. Windows 7 would require several updated APIs that will have to be ported from Windows 8, before it can support Internet Explorer 10. Two of those APIs (Direct2D accelerated drawing API and the DirectWrite text API) are still in beta versions and will have to be made available in their final builds before IE10 is released.

Windows 8 Now Selling Faster Than Windows 7 – But Who’s Buying?

Since the launch of Windows 8, word around the block has been the new OS is not getting the warm reception Microsoft expected. There have been numerous reports regarding slow user adoption and a lackluster performance as compared to Windows 7’s launch. This is not the case according to Windows’ Chief Tami Reller. Speaking at a technology conference, Reller confidently stated that the company had sold 40 million licenses of Windows 8 so far.

Windows 8 Outpacing Windows 7 Sales


If Reller is to be believed, Windows 8 is outpacing Windows 7 comfortably. Back when it was launched, it took 10 weeks for Windows 7 to sell 60 million copies. Going by average, that would mean 6 million licenses per week, which would mean 40 million would have taken around seven weeks or close to two months. At this rate, it is clear to see that Windows 8 is selling faster than Windows 7. Why then was the buzz negative?

　

It is a pertinent question to ask the people at Microsoft. Almost all major new outlets have reported that Windows 8 is slow out of the blocks and users have not responded enthusiastically to it. Despite the hype created by Microsoft and the rampant advertising, one cannot help but notice that the sales of Windows 8 have been anything but spectacular. If the Windows chief is saying it, it makes people want to believe it.

Who’s Buying The Licenses?


The fact behind the mystery is that selling 40 million licenses doesn’t mean Windows 8 has 40 million users. Tami Reller conveniently ignored to clarify the details regarding who had purchased the licenses thus far. According to industry insiders, even if the figure is accurate, most of the licenses have been sold to hardware partners who are helping Microsoft provide Windows 8 to customers. They include companies such as Dell, HP and Lenovo.

It is the responsibility of the partners to deliver the product to the final consumer. Till then, the copies of Windows 8 will be lying on shelves gathering dust. So, what Ms. Reller really meant was that 40 million licenses have been sold thus far but not all of them to users. It is anybody’s guess how many people are actually using the new Windows.

Windows 8 Prices Set to Rise


Another reason why Microsoft has been able to ship so many copies of Windows 8 is because of the low price. Microsoft offered users the option to upgrade their operating system for a mere $40, a price which the company has never offered before. Many users jumped at the opportunity to get their hands on the new OS even though they had no idea how it was. However, the honeymoon period will end in February when the prices will rise. That would be the litmus test for the true success of Windows 8.

As of now, people can only speculate as to the number of people who are using Windows 8. It may be some time before a clearer picture emerges.

Most industry experts have commented that Microsoft has taken a gamble by introducing the Windows 8 to a wide audience. They feel the operating system is better suited to handheld devices and that users installing it on laptops and desktops won’t enjoy using it. It remains to be seen to what extent that proves to be true.

Yet, there is no doubt that launching a new operating system is a gamble. A company can never be sure if the fans are going to like and accept it. In case the PC and laptop users reject the Windows 8, it is quite possible that Linux vendors might be the biggest beneficiaries. They have stated that they have overlooked such opportunities in the past but not any more. Should they find an opening, they will make the most of it.

　

However, those with expertise doubt the vendor’s claims. They feel that the Linux has been marketed and advertised poorly in the past. To ensure they capture the market should Windows 8 fail, the vendors need to put a solid marketing push in the coming months. Unless the users are aware of the available alternatives, they would keep using Windows 8 or downgrade to Windows 7.

According to vendors though, they feel that the fact that people have to purchase Windows 7 to use it works in their favor as well. They have remarked that users aren’t in favor of spending money on an operating system. So, if they chose to stick with Windows, they would have to part with some cash to get a new operating system.

Knowing Microsoft, they would be prepared for all contingencies. They are putting much of their reputation on the line with the new-look operating system. Windows 8 is loaded with new features and many changes have been made to the existing design. It could misfire or could be the best thing Microsoft created. While there is little doubt that Windows 8 would succeed on handheld devices, it is the computers’ users Linux vendors wishes to target and capture before Microsoft has a chance to react.
